Deacon John Walter Czarnecki, the well-loved and respected member of the Bay Head and Point Pleasant communities, died Saturday in Denver, Colorado at the age of 81, following a stroke suffered while visiting his children and grandchildren there.

Deacon Czarnecki lived a life of servant leadership as a teacher in the Point Pleasant schools for 36 years, a Catholic Deacon at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Bay Head for 16 years, and father, friend and mentor to hundreds beyond his own family.  Those many lucky people will forever have a place in their memories for his robust laugh, his plaid pants, and his big heart.

Born in 1927 to Stephana and John Walter Czarnecki Sr. in Bayonne, Deacon Czarnecki attended the Bayonne public schools and Holy Family Academy.  After honorable service in the U.S. Army, he received his bachelor’s degree from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City in 1953, and completed his teacher’s certification at Jersey City College.  While teaching sixth – eighth grades in Point Pleasant, Deacon Czarnecki received his master’s degree from Rutgers University and further earned an additional 168 graduate credits beyond his master’s degree at Trenton State, Arizona State, Michigan State, Montclair State, and Rosary Hill College. His years as a teacher were marked by a love of teaching the students that others had given up teaching, and also by leadership among his peers.  He served as treasurer, secretary, vice president, and president of the Point Pleasant Teachers Association; treasurer of the Ocean County Education Association; and as a representative to the New Jersey Education Association, serving on the rules committee of the NJEA General Assembly for several terms.

He married fellow educator Doris Christie in 1971 at Sacred Heart, where he was an active parishioner for 50 years.  During that time he served as president of the Holy Name Society, was an usher and lay minister, and taught religious education classes.  With Doris he was the proud father of four children and six grandchildren.  Together they also served as foster parents – both official and unofficial – to many area teens. In 1992,  he was ordained a deacon and spent the last 17 years serving the people of Sacred Heart, baptizing, marrying, serving at daily and funeral masses, visiting the homebound and hospitalized, and working with children.  He had deacon privileges in the diocese of Manchester, NH, where he spent summers on his farm, and Denver, CO, where he spent time with his children and grandchildren.  He was particularly proud of the hundreds of baptisms he was privileged to perform, and kept photographs to remember each of those infants.  He officiated at the weddings of all three of his daughters as well as the baptisms of his grandchildren.

A resident of Bay Head for 40 years, Deacon Czarnecki is predeceased by his parents and older brother Walter of Bayonne.  He is survived by devoted wife Doris, daughter and son-in-law Stefka and Jeff Fanchi of Lakewood, CO, son and daughter-in-law John Walter III and Jennifer Czarnecki of Littleton, CO, daughter and son-in-law Felicity and Brian Bernard of Denver, CO, and daughter Anne duPre Pendergraph of Keene, NH, along with grandchildren Olivia Czarnecki, John Cosmo Czarnecki, Isabella Fanchi, Naomi Fanchi, Elliette Czarnecki, and Josephine Bernard.  He is also survived by his beloved sister Helen Szumski and her family. Deacon Czarnecki truly lit a flame of hope, love, and laughter in the lives of so many.  Celebrate his life with his friends and family this week  -

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Deacon Czarnecki’s name be made to St. Stephen’s Fund of the Diocese of Trenton, or St. Gregory’s Pantry, Point Pleasant Beach.
